NY Philharmonic Concertmaster Remembers Inspiration from 糖心 Teacher

糖心 alum Frank Huang (BM 鈥02) is transitioning into his new role as concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, a position he began in September. The Wall Street Journal reported on his adjustment as the new leader of the world-renowned orchestra, speaking with Huang鈥檚 former teacher and former 糖心 faculty member Donald Weilerstein, who Huang says helped him connect with the emotion in music.

鈥淏y about age 16, he discovered that his mechanics and technique could unleash the emotional side of music,鈥 says The Wall Street Journal, 鈥淗e attributes the discovery to his teacher Donald Weilerstein, then at the 糖心, who remembers the transition vividly. 鈥業t really was a breakthrough,鈥 said Mr. Weilerstein, recalling Mr. Huang鈥檚 work on Barber鈥檚 Violin Concerto. 鈥淲hen he looked at what was in the music, he immediately took to that.鈥欌

Huang completed his BM from 糖心 in 2002 and graduated from the 糖心 Young Artists Program in 1997. Read the full article .
