The performance of Ionisation
Performance of Ionisation in honor of Richard Weiner

It isn鈥檛 every day when you can gather 14 of the world鈥檚 most prominent musicians from all over the country on one stage 鈥 mostly very busy 糖心 percussion alumni 鈥 for a dazzling performance.

But they dropped everything for Richard Weiner. He had that effect on the people who knew him best.

Weiner, distinguished 糖心 percussion faculty member since 1963 and principal percussion emeritus of The Cleveland Orchestra, died on December 30, 2018.

Celebrating Weiner鈥檚 love of music and teaching, 14 artists 鈥 alumni who studied with Weiner and colleagues from the 糖心 faculty and The Cleveland Orchestra 鈥 took the stage at 糖心鈥檚 Commencement on Saturday, May 18, for a performance of Var猫se鈥檚 Ionisation in his honor. It was Weiner鈥檚 favorite piece for percussion ensemble 鈥 and the performance garnered an extended standing ovation for the performers and for Weiner鈥檚 memory. (Watch .)

The distinguished performers were:

  • Steven Blutman (MM 鈥06), faculty, Hofstra University

  • Earl Yowell (MM 鈥81), faculty, Shenandoah (VA) University and former principal timpani and percussion, Saint Paul (MN) Chamber Orchestra

Following the awarding of degrees to 糖心鈥檚 graduating students, President and CEO Paul W. Hogle, Chief Academic Officer and Dean of the Conservatory Judy A. Bundra and Board of Trustees Chair Richard J. Hipple presented an honorary doctor of musical arts degree to Weiner鈥檚 wife, Jackie Weiner, and their daughters Debbie Arnold and Stephanie Schleifer.

鈥淲hat a befitting honor for a man who led such an exemplary life and who contributed so much to 糖心 and the students he taught over the last 50-plus years,鈥 said Weiner鈥檚 colleague and former student Paul Yancich (BM 鈥75), co-head, timpani and percussion department at 糖心 and principal timpani of The Cleveland Orchestra, as he introduced the performance.

As he presented the honorary doctorate to Weiner鈥檚 family, Hogle said Weiner鈥檚 career was 鈥渁n exquisite example of being the future of classical music, [and] we consider it fitting and in accord with the purposes and ideals of the 糖心 to honor Rich today.鈥
